Middle school sports return after 40 years!

Middle school sports are returning to Battle Ground Public Schools after a 40-year absence. The district is introducing basketball, cross country, and soccer in 2021-22; with other sports to be added in future years.

The last season of middle school sports in Battle Ground was in 1982 before they were eliminated due to a double levy failure. The Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors worked to bring back middle school sports in response to requests from parents and community members on district surveys. A few years ago, the district began conducting ThoughtExchange surveys that brought priorities such as middle school sports to the top of the list of what the community wants for our students.

  • Participation is open to 7th and 8th graders. Spring cross country is open to students in 6th-8th grades.
  • Seasons will be 5 weeks long this first year.
    • Weeks 1-3 will be non-competitive intramural play.
    • Weeks 4-5 will be competitive games vs. other middle schools in the district.
    • Students can participate in just intramural play.
  • The sports fee will be $10 for 3 weeks of intramurals. The fee for the two weeks of competitive games is $15 for those selected to be on the competitive team.
  • Under the K-12 pandemic guidance from the state Department of Health, basketball is considered a high-risk indoor sport. All athletes, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask. Due to a shortage of test supplies, the district will not be testing athletes.
  • Prior to the first practice, students must have a completed sports physical and be registered on Family ID.
  • Practices and games will be held after middle schools release at 2:40 p.m.
  • Participating students must maintain academic eligibility per district requirements.

Middle school sports funding

Students who participate in middle school sports pay an ASB fee and individual sport fees that cover some program costs such as transportation between games and officials.

Battle Ground’s local school levy pays for middle school sports equipment and coaches’ salaries. The district is able to fund student activities beyond basic education and continues to be fiscally responsible while maintaining the lowest local school tax rate in Clark County. Thank you voters for supporting our students and approving a four-year levy for 2022-2025!

To help manage the cost of reintroducing the middle school sports program, sports will be phased in over several years and use existing facilities.
